Welcome to Better Systems & Operations, THE newsletter for micro-businesses who are ready to run their business without it running them into the ground. When I have something worth sharing, you'll get practical tips on systems for tiny teams, operations that actually make sense, and keeping your business in its place. Because your real life is the center of the universe, not your business.

Heyyy {{first_name}}!

I’ve had two conversations in the last week about tech stacks with other founders in communities that I trust and respect.

So much trust has been lost over the last two years by small business owners like us in the tech we use as they sell to larger companies, go back on their original values, and much more.

So today I’m sharing with you some of the tech I use to run Bohannon Virtual Solutions.

And before I get started, most (if not all) of these are affiliate links. I will put an * by any word/name that uses an affiliate link to hyper link.

Selling Digital Products

I bought Teachery on a whim last year on Black Friday and got it for about $300. It was the best $300 I’ve ever spent.

I use Teachery to sell digital products and my free lead magnets.

I will tell you, it is a small, family owned company. It is run by a husband and wife (which is part of the reason I support it) and it is not as quick as a lot of the others to come out with new features.

HOWEVER, they are continuing to come out with new features and they are about to have a HUGE update release. So their pricing is about to jump.

If you’re selling digital products or courses as a secondary to your main service or offer, I highly recommend them. (If you are a course creator first, I recommend Kajabi, Kartra, or GHL.)

Their newest update is called Teachery 4.0 and I’m very excited to see what comes with it:

  • Communities

  • Memberships

  • PayPal

  • More design customization

  • A faster, mobile-friendly rebuild

The $550 Lifetime price ends August 15 and increases to $950 after that.

If you’ve been looking for a ThriveCart alternative, I highly recommend Teachery. Not only do I know several others who have gone to it, but I’ve been personally using it for almost a year now and I love all the things it can do.

Plus, their support is top notch, especially for a smaller company!

All-in-One CRM

I have a love-hate relationship with Bonsai.

Last year I tried LITERALLY every small business CRM and client portal under the sun.

Ultimately, I felt Bonsai was the easiest for clients.

At first, I felt like there was still a lot of room for improvement, and I still feel that somewhat, but they just finally came out with two updates that covered my BIGGEST complaints, and now I’m very happy with it. (They were separate proposals and contracts that required too much manual work and slowed down the sales process, and access to emails with clients in the portal/contacts tab).

I will definitely be sticking with Bonsai and I will say every time I’ve had an issue, their support is INCREDIBLY helpful and frankly, that’s enough to sway me these days.

Email Marketing

I switched to Beehiiv earlier this year.

I’d been looking for a Kit replacement since they upped their pricing last year.

I’d been using Beehiiv for Unearthed Learning Roots and I learned that I can have two different newsletters with two different domains on the same exact plan.

So I’m paying $10 more a month now for Beehiiv than I was for Kit and I get two newsletters.

Honestly, that’s a win for me!

Beehiiv also allows you to have digital products now, although I’m not in love with the set up as it its right now. I do have a few things going through there for ease, but I’m not planning to continue using it since Teachery came out with a better way to sell digital products.

Project Management

I’ve been using ClickUp for years for project management. I use it to track my big projects, my daily tasks, and ideas I want to remember for the future.

I did recently hear some troublesome news about them letting go of 22% of their staff and “replacing them” with AI.

I am very nervous about this and watching closely. I’m a long-time ClickUp user and they’ve been forcing more and more AI on us and it might be time to move on, but it will take me FOREVER to move all my stuff in there.

Coming Soon

I’m putting in more and more work on my SOP templates that will be coming out in Octover, just in time for the next live session of Your First SOP, Done. Keep an eye out for that!

If you’re looking for a new tech and I didn’t mention something you’re interested above, feel free to email me and we can chat through some things that might work for you!
